Vacation Butterfly is ideal for the knitter who wants to balance the ease of a garter stitch shawl with the challenge of staggered short rows. For extra excitement, be sure to use Urth yarn UNEEK as your contrast. This yarn has extra long color changes that repeat at intervals intended to balance in this project. It is fascinating to watch your short rows come alive with color!

When: Thursday nights from 6-8 in January: January 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, and February 3rd.

Instructor: Kimberly

Skills Needed: This pattern is best suited for the intermediate to advanced knitter. Knowing how to ‘read your knitting’ is a must and will make the project a joy to knit.  Familiarity with short rows and garter tab cast on are a plus, but not essential, as I will gladly teach you.

Skills Learned: This is a Knit Along, more than a ‘how to’, but I will guide you through a somewhat cumbersome pattern and show you where the ‘speed bumps’ are along the way.  I will also show you some very helpful hints that make this pattern easier to navigate, such as how to knit in reverse on the purl rows.  You will be very proficient in short rows by the end of the project.  You will also learn a very pretty garter picot edge technique.

Materials:

What is a Knit Along? A KAL is group of people who are knitting the same project together. KALs are a great opportunity to meet other knitters and get help and support from them and the instructor.

Benefits of a KAL:

  • There is a special energy that comes from knitting with friends
  • Get help and support from fellow knitters
  • Helps to stay focused and finish projects within a timeframe
  • Friends who knit together encourage each other to finish--they offer considerable motivation!
